Drawing dictation! (speaking)

Working in pairs, choose one of the following images (A or B)! Keep it as a secret, and try to describe it in English to your partner so that he/she can draw it!

For example, if you choose picture A, you can say: "There is a window on the right side of the room"

When you're finished, show the image and compare it with the drawing. Are they similar? What are the differences? (And now... change roles!!)

Picture A.

Picture B.

  1. It seems very interesting this activity. The student must learn vocabulary and they can practice with his partner. I like it because there are cooperative learning in which students can help themselves. They can correct mistakes and learn vocabulary together.

In addition it uses comparative adjectives so they also learn grammar.

It is a complete activity! Thank you!

  2. Hello Celia!

In my opinion this activity is a good way to practice speaking and specially how to describe a picture. It also promotes independent learning under the teacher's supervision.

With this activity they can practice their vocabulary about adjectives, action verbs, furniture and so on.

Last but not least, this activity works different types of intelligences such as, interpersonal, verbal linguistic, visual-spatial and bodily kinesthetic.

    Congratulations!

  3. Hello!

Congratulations! I think it is a very good idea because students could practice speaking and also you motivate them for drawing.

I agree with Beatriz, I think it is a very good way to learn in pairs, because they have to improvise and I´m sure they are going to expand their vocabulary.

    Rergards!

  4. Hello!
I agree with my mates, this activity enhances speaking and makes students make an effort to understand what their classmates are saying (as they have to pay attention to be able to draw).
Nevertheless, I think this activity does not need a screen to be used in class (we can choose any picture from a book or an image they can look for in a magazine) and it is difficult to be practiced at home, as they do not have their classmates nearby.
Obviously, you could always ask them to do it in class.
I also like the activity because they have to improvise their answer using different structures. Besides, the teacher can check understanding comparing the real images with the drawings.
    Congratulations.

  9. Hello, Celia.
In general, your blog is very interesting, useful and colorful. Regarding this activity, you work interaction, that is, mutual participation between two students, and they both are taking an active role speaking, drawing and understanding what his/her mate is expressing (input and output)in a face to face way. They are going to learn and practice new structures, new vocabulary. Besides, you work visual global understanding (all the picture) and then they have to move towards detailed understanding (specific things there are in the picture)so,they have to speak in an organized way for his/her mate can understand, more or less, the given information and then, draw it. I can add that it is an excellent way for encouranging them, from the beginning, because as it is a secret, they are very motivated in order to discover how the picture looks like. Finally, you are working motivation so their attitude is positive into the acquisition of a second language. Great!

    Kind regards,

    Mª del Carmen Puertas López

  10. First of all, I would like you to congratulate as I believe you have done a very useful and nice blog. Secondly, I have found this particular exercise very interesting. Is not easy to think about a speaking exercise and I think that one is a clever one.

  13. Undoubtedly it's a wonderful activity. I think when children perform these activities enjoy learning. Children draw and talk to each other and I think they can work in groups and pairs.

On the other hand we can use many new words to describe the photographs. Children will have to use verbs to describe the actions of the characters.

Finally I have to say that I liked the activity and perhaps will use it in the future !!

    Thank you!!
